In today’s tech-saturated environment, students—especially those in rigorous programs like Notre Dame’s electrical engineering curriculum—face growing challenges such as digital burnout, academic stress, and reduced face-to-face interaction. The PinballEErs EE-themed pinball machine addresses these concerns by offering a playful, screen-free experience that encourages social connection and stress relief. Drawing inspiration from the curriculum itself, the machine includes humorous and nostalgic references like “EE” target bumpers and Professor Huang’s iconic “Patrick Mahomes” quote. With vibrant lights, sound effects, and a built-in scoring system, the game transforms a simple pastime into an immersive, competitive, and socially engaging experience.
Engineered with precision, the machine features mechanical flippers, multiple interactive targets, IR sensors, and custom electronics powered by a microcontroller. The game operates across idle, gameplay, and editing modes, with transitions triggered automatically through sensor input. Built from laser-cut acrylic and 3D-printed components, the machine balances aesthetics with functionality. Whether it’s sparking friendly competition or offering a break from screens, the PinballEErs project combines engineering ingenuity with real human connection—bringing students together through fun, familiarity, and shared experience.
