SmartLint:
An IoT Dryer-Fire Solution for Homeowners
The Need
Full lint traps can start fires and make it harder to dry clothes. Older dryers are more prone to fires and often don’t have the sophisticated mechanisms to prevent overheating that some modern dryers do. In fact, over 2,900 clothes dryer fires are reported each year causing an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries and $35 million in property loss. An estimated 34% of these can be attributed to a lint build-up, making this the single largest cause of dryer fires.
Our solution is to use sensors to measure the airflow, temperature, and pressure in the dryer sleeve. The dryer sleeve is not convenient to check, so a system to monitor these and alert the user when the readings indicate an imminent fire. The system alerts the user physically by LED and alarm, as well as through a wifi page. The sensors our inserted into the sleeve itself.
The Device
SmartLint is a self contained system that is already attached to a small section of sleeve to make installation easier. The sensors are attached to the inside of the sleeve and run to the main board within the outer casing. The casing also contains spots for the LED, reset switch, and alarm to extrude for exterior interaction.
