Project Problem and Proposed Solution
Riding a bike can be a very easy and healthy form of exercise, but in order to accurately measure its effectiveness, one often must have access to the information provided by a stationary exercise bike: heart rate, distance travelled based on number of pedal reps, time elapsed, speed, and calories burned. However, stationary exercise bikes can often be very expensive, and one does not get additional benefits from cycling outside such as sun exposure, additional stress relief, and improved air quality.
To solve this problem, we decided to create an electrical system that would interface with a normal outdoor bicycle and gather data using various sensors and devices. This system would display said gathered data through means which are safely and easily accessible by the rider – both by a small LCD screen and by bluetooth connection to a smartphone app which could also store a bank of recent data. Within budget, this could be a far more affordable option for those who wish to obtain immediate health information during their bike ride.
