Project Motivation

"For years, I have started off my day with a cup of coffee. During the week, I use disposable cups to take my coffee on the go with me to class or work. When I lived at home, my mother used to make a pot that my whole family would share in the morning. However, now that I'm living on my own, I can't drink a whole pot by myself. This has required me to start using single use pod coffee makers, such as Keurigs. I've noticed over the years though, that the predetermined sizes on these machines are never quite right for the cup I'm using. They always either underfill and leave my cup half empty, or overfill and spill coffee all over the place. These coffee makers have become a staple of an American kitchen, yet this issue remains unsolved, so when we needed a project for Senior Design, the choice for me was obvious. We sought out to improve and streamline the morning coffee experience for the millions of coffee drinkers around the world."

"There's nothing more frustrating than being in a rush in the early morning hours, and not having the right amount of coffee. Sure, I can look up the size of my travel mug that I purchased online, but what if I didn't know where I got it? A certain number of ounces is not something I can see with my eyes, and therefore makes it difficult to estimate how many ounces of coffee my cup can take without spilling,or without under-serving. Everyday consumers are visual and don't like to think in terms of measurable units, and our solution abstracts these measurable units and gives users a clear and confident visual of how much coffee they want to be and will be poured."
